I started coaching on the collegiate summer camp circuit after my second year in college and worked at camps up and down the East Coast every summer of college. I started as a volunteer coach in the early 2000s when my first of three daughters began playing for the Maryland Lacrosse Club (rec) and TLC Lacrosse Club. I was the Head Coach of the Sky Walkers Lacrosse Club 2021 Blue Team from 2017-2021 and have recently served as an assistant coach on the Bryn Mawr School Varsity team.
Most of what I know about lacrosse, I learned from some of the all-time best minds in the game. My love for the game starts and finishes with my father, Mickey Webster. Dad was a three-time 1st Team All-American and National Hall of Fame attackman who played at Johns Hopkins in the late 50s. He is by far the most important reason I was able to have a successful playing career and have such a love for the sport.
I improved my fundamentals under some awesome, positive, and encouraging parent and youth coaches while learning to compete on Towsontowne Rec and Loch Raven Summer League teams.
As the true definition of a "late bloomer", I didn't blossom physically or truly get mentally focused as a player until late in high school under the watchful eye of Boys' Latin's Bobby Shriver. "Shrives" was smart and tough, but also fair. His ability to push the right buttons to get any high school boy to believe they could be successful, regardless of the circumstances, was always his greatest gift.
At UNC, I was lucky to have the last two years of Willie Scroggs' coaching career. A Hall of Fame coach and a man of few words, Willie had a knack for offering subtle wisdom which very often translated into a successful outcome. He encouraged getting up and down the field, creativity within reason, teamwork, and strength in numbers, which were staples of our very successful Tar Heel teams in the early 90s which earned 4 straight ACC Championships, 4 trips to the Men's Final Four weekend, and an Undefeated National Championship in 1991.
As a coach, I now try to draw on the lessons that I learned from these coaches who helped guide me over the past forty-plus years. I believe that I foster a passion for the game, and through drilling the fundamentals, building next-level skills, and teaching the "why" along the way, I have been able to help players continue to get better.
I have been living happily in West Towson for 20 years with my wife, Nicole, our three daughters, and our dog, "Pearl".
